S$99 / HK$599 Known as Maneki Neko or Fortune Cat the lucky cat is very popular in Japanese and Chinese cultures and believed to attract good luck and fortune for its owners. Dark red and black enamel look striking against the 18k gold plated charm and decorate the cats features. Sitting with with winking eyes, the cat beckons with a moveable paw. The Chinese word "cai" which means "wealth" is painted in black enamel. My favourite detail is the tiny bell which hangs around her neck.

Fakes are often well made. These checks help, but they do not replace an examination by a professional.

Hallmark

The stamp a genuine piece carries is shown above, next to the material. Good fakes copy the stamp, so also check its position and size.

Shape and details

Compare the piece with the photo above: outline, enamel colours, position and number of stones, lettering.

Magnet

Silver and gold are not magnetic. If the piece sticks to a magnet, it is not genuine.

Price

An offer far below the original price is a warning sign.

Packaging

A genuine box or receipt proves nothing about the piece inside it.

On VaultBase, the seller is paid only once you have received the piece.
