Material value is weight times fineness times the gold price. It is not a purchase offer. Branded and designer jewellery often sells for considerably more.
Two ways to sell your gold jewellery
Sell it as a piece of jewellery
Branded, designer and vintage jewellery usually fetches more as a whole than when melted down. On VaultBase you list for free, the buyer’s payment is secured, and your piece can be professionally authenticated on request.

The fineness is usually stamped into the piece as a number, often inside a ring or on the clasp of a necklace. It shows how many thousandths are pure gold.
- 999
- Fine gold, practically pure. Rare in jewellery because it is very soft.
- 750
- 18 carat. The usual standard for fine jewellery in Switzerland.
- 585
- 14 carat. Common in Germany and in everyday jewellery.
- 375
- 9 carat. Common in jewellery from the United Kingdom.

Marks such as GP, GF or RGP mean gold-plated. Such pieces only carry a thin layer of gold and have no meaningful gold value.
